Compact
What is the Compact?
The national Compact, published 1998, is a written understanding between the Government and the Voluntary and Community Sector which sets out a number of commitments about how the two sectors work together. The East Sussex Compact was launched in October 2003 and is revised regularly. It aims to:
- agree principles and provide an effective framework for partnership working
- improve working relationships in order to provide more effective and co-ordinated services to local communities
- improve consultation, communication, partnership working, trust and respect
- help partner agencies to meet common strategic aims.

Compact Voice green flag awards 2010
As part of a national map of high-performing Compact areas, Compact Voice has awarded East Sussex with a “green flag”; this recognises exemplary partnership working which has led to better outcomes for the local community.
The map highlights 15 “green-flagged” areas, including East Sussex, where using the Compact has delivered real benefits to transform the lives of people and groups in the community.
These benefits include delivering better services, and encourage local volunteering. Good partnerships can also help give voice to marginalised groups and help minimise the impact of the spending cuts that many local areas are currently facing.
Further local areas will be highlighted in the future with the map updated as additional examples are gathered.
