What is the voluntary and community sector worth to you?
The deadline for replies to the Economic Value Assessment has been extended to 24 July 2010. This is an important survey for voluntary and community groups in East Sussex as it will be used to prove the value of the sector as cutbacks are being considered by funders. If your group is a member of 3VA, and you haven't already, please complete and return the short EVA questionnaire to us before 24July! SpeakUp Project Consultant

SpeakUp Forum is currently looking to recruit a consultant to work with the Forum and Migrant Communities Project on the BME and Migrant Communities Empowerment Event (a working title).

General activities will include:
1. Take a leading role in planning and delivering a countywide event for BME & migrant community Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations, public sector and VCS practitioners, as well as any other relevant partners or individuals within the community.

2. Work directly with the SpeakUp Forum Coordinator, the Migrant Communities Project Officer and Event Steering Group throughout the process.

3. Engage with organisations, practitioners and individuals to ensure required number of participants (with support from SpeakUp and MAG)

4. Undertake all necessary related administrative activities, either personally or with the consultant's own administrative support (NB. SpeakUp Forum and Migrant Communities Project Officer will set up and coordinate the Steering Group meeting(s), manage the event booking system and provide locally relevant information e.g. about suitable venues, caterers, delegate packs etc as well as staff and volunteers during the event).

5. Write post event report.

Fit for Nothing? Wednesday 17 February 2010

A free, all age event looking at low cost and fun ways of giving the mind and body a New Year clean up
from 10am - 2pm, Community House, Meridian Centre, Peacehaven

This event is run by Lewes District Community Network in partnership with 3VA Lewes District, East Sussex Downs and Weald NHS and Peacehaven Town Council and is focussed on general wellbeing for all. There is an underlying theme of tackling obesity and promoting good mental health through the five themes below. The aim of the event is to promote, focus and direct people, particularly those on a low income, to activities and initiatives in the area that are free or low cost, to reduce some barriers to participation.

Fit for Nothing - Themes & zones:
o Being Healthy
o Being Active
o Being Relaxed
o Learning
o Volunteering

The central hall at Community House will be set up as a lively market-place zoned in the five themes above with stalls of relevant organisations and groups giving information and opportunities for continued involvement. Alongside this will be free workshops running throughout the day in adjoining rooms that link to the themes.

You can fill in the survey on behalf of your organisation or a partnership or use to gather feedback at your network meeting. You can contact Miriam at SDCVS to meet with the researcher and take part in the research through telephone or face to face meeting. More information in the questionnaire.

The law is changing

Are you familiar with the new rules and safeguards?


From 12 October 2009 new measures will be introduced to help prevent unsuitable people from undertaking paid or volunteer work with children or vulnerable adults. This is called Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS).
South Downs CVS are providing a 2 hour session to inform you of the Scheme and the new rules and what they mean for volunteers, employees and employers.
